I read an articles today on the Bangkok post that said some pretty negative things about Koh Phangan and the party scene here. You can read the entire articles here . They seem to see Koh Phangan as a hot spot of drug abuse and drug related crime. I’m sorry but having lived here for 18 months I have to say I see less evidence of drug use than I ever did in my hometown back in the UK. To quote the article:
Shivamoon , Halfmoon, Blackmoon and Jungle Party are also big events on the island, attracting large crowds abusing excessively all kinds of narcotics and illegal substances. These parties run from 9 p.m. until noon the next day, hammering their terrible noise into the open air, leaving many villagers sleepless all night.
Imagine these night-long, noise polluting, most disturbing events happening in your area, or seeing these drugged individuals walking in your street.
No need to mention fatalities and injuries, the rising amount of drug-related accidents, robberies, and house break-ins.
In other major tourist areas in Bangkok, Phuket or Koh Samui, entertainment venues have to close at 2 a.m. Enforcing that measure on the above-mentioned places would reduce the problems. Better, of course, would be a total and unnegotiable ban, especially in and near residential areas, to bring back peace and a good night’s sleep.
We have heard this kind of thing before, the only difference this time is the fact that some of this came directly from the mouth of Pol Lt-Gen Wuthi Liptapallop, who is determined it would seem, to fight the drug problem in Thailand.
Time will tell if Koh Phangan will survive this onslaught and remain as it is now, I guess invetiable, things will change, it’s just a matter of time.
